Like everyone else in the world, I’ve struggled for a clear complexion since adolescence. After decades of skincare product misadventures and wasted money, in my mid-50’s I’ve finally discovered something that works for me: Omorovicza luxury skincare from Hungary.
Learning about Omorovicza and using their products has been a real adventure and I’ve learned a lot. It is now early October, 2016, and after using Omorovicza since February, all I can say is that I’ll never use another brand of skincare as long as I can buy this one. Their products work. Beautifully! One of the things that helped convince me to try the brand was all the positive comments I read on the website. I’m planning to contribute back by adding some comments of my own, but this is my Omorovicza diary, in case my experience can help someone else trying to decide whether or not the price is worth it.
Everyone has their own skin problems — unless of course you’re from England and have that perfect dewy complexion like someone in a Jane Austin movie. My own complexion is light olive, with the usual oily t-zone, and I’ve been fighting small whiteheads in the crease of my left nostril since I was a teenager. Not on the right, just the left side. Weird.
It’s been decades since I was in my teens, and over time I’ve tried literally almost everything to get rid of the constant breakouts. I tried all the usual skincare brands that advertise in the fashion magazines. I tried Olive oil, Liquid Vitamin E, even 70% Ethanol solution – kill the infection, right? (In theory, yes. In practice, it was incredibly harsh, and the resulting dry skin and clogged pores made the problem much worse.) Nothing worked and I just lived with it.
At least I started wearing sunscreen daily when I was in my early 20’s. If you want to keep your skin looking young as long as possible, then avoid exposing it to the sun. I lived in Boulder, Colorado and spent a lot of time outdoors in the mountains and in the high desert in Utah – rock-climbing, ice-climbing, mountaineering, skiing, running, backpacking – and using sunscreen became a daily habit. I always used sunscreen products with moisturizer, and I cleaned my face at night with Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser like my mother and grandmother, and that was about it. Pond’s didn’t prevent breakouts or the occasional dots of rosacea, or completely heal my chapped skin in the winter, but it’s a good moisturizer and makeup remover, and I knew it wouldn’t hurt me. So I stuck with Pond’s. I was also working as a medical librarian, and some dermatologists I knew recommended Lubriderm for a body lotion, and I’ve used the scent-free version for decades.
So everything else was good, but my face remained problematic. The constant whiteheads on my nose have been a pain to deal with forever, and I started feeling self-conscious about the cumulative scarring. I’m also not getting any younger, and gravity is taking its toll on my skin as well.
When Don and I were getting ready for another camping trip to Arches National Park in July of 2015, I decided to get more serious about my skincare. The last time we were out there, in 2013, I’d had a really hard time keeping my skin moisturized in the arid, high altitude desert environment. The mineral-based sunscreen dried out my skin, and so did the chlorine in the motel swimming pools. It took months for my skin to recover from that trip. This time I wanted to keep it from getting so bad.
I decided to give Clinique products another try. I’d just finished reading Estee Lauder’s autobiography, and she was an amazing woman! I thought maybe I just needed to be more dedicated to taking care of my complexion. So couple of weeks before the trip I went to Macy’s and spent what seemed like a significant amount of money on a complete set of Clinique skincare products, which I began to use daily. I was concerned about some of the chemical ingredients, but I decided to put my trust in the brand.
Bad mistake.
The instructions on the bottle of toner were in print so small I could barely read them, but they did seem to indicate that one should avoid the eyes, which I did. Until one night about a week later when I was getting ready for bed and very tired, and I spaced out what I was doing and swiped the toner-soaked cotton ball across my eyelids. I realized what I’d done right away and rinsed it off, and went to bed.
By the time I woke up the next morning, my eyelids had swollen to about twice their usual thickness – blinking felt weird. My eyelids itched and were dry and scaly. The only products that gave me any relief were Cortaid and Pond’s. When I put the cold cream on my eyelids, it felt like tiny bubble-wrap. Thttttttttt! It was horrifying, and it only cleared up just before our trip. I was very careful not to do that again!
Hiking in the Arches Backcountry
Unfortunately, once again during a vacation to Utah’s canyon country, my skincare could not cope with the effects of the high altitude desert climate, or the mineral-based sunscreen I used, which really dried my skin. Once again the chlorine in the motel pools seemed to age my skin visibly, even though I rinsed off right away after swimming.
The Clinique products were no help at all, and even seemed to make everything worse – they caused my skin to break out like crazy. When we got back to Pittsburgh I was so disgusted I threw it all away, and went back to using Pond’s.
By September my complexion was once again driving me crazy, and I went online and started to research luxury skincare products on high-end retail websites. I thought maybe I just needed to find better products.
While I was looking at the beauty section of the Nieman Marcus website, I saw a line of skincare products bearing a logo that I recognized from our desert vacation, and it caught my attention. I’d seen a very beautiful French woman and her two gorgeous teenage daughters using products with that logo in the Women’s bathroom at the campground in Arches National Park. I remembered the logo really well because a) I was struck by the beauty of the woman and girls, b) it was a distinctive design, and c) I remembered really clearly how much I’d admired the austere but elegant product packaging. The cleansing foam and other exotic-looking products the French women were using were packaged in plain white tubes with only the logo for decoration.
So I clicked on the products with that logo on the Neiman Marcus website, and learned that the brand was Omorovicza, from Hungary! I’m Hungarian by marriage, so I stopped and read the product descriptions before moving on to Omorovicza.com directly to learn more. Their website contains a ton of information.
This is skincare, Magyar style. Their approach is scientific. No-nonsense. No BS. Just top quality products presented with perfect elegance. I really appreciate the contrast between this, and the usual condescending lies spun by the mainstream “beauty” brands, which begin to look tawdry as soon as you compare them to Omorovicza.
Each product is described in detail, including photographs and often a short video demonstrating proper use. Each product page contains a basic description, a list of ingredients, a description of the key benefits, instructions on use, questions and answers, and customer reviews. The reviews are particularly interesting, as many people describe their own skin conditions, and offer their own experiences on how they used the products and what were the results.
The Omorovicza story is amazing!
Did you know that Hungary is the world’s thermal hot spring capital, with a culture of using mineral hot springs for medicinal benefits that goes all the way back to the Romans? There are spas all over the country, and people are sent to different hot springs health resorts by their doctors. The mineral composition varies from one place to another, and doctors send their patients to the spa with the minerals that are known to help their particular condition.
Omorovicza was founded by Stephen and Margaret de Heinrich de Omorovicza. He is an Hungarian nobleman descended from the Omorovicza family which built one of the most beautiful spas in the country, the Racz spa, in the early 19th century. Margaret is an American who was working as Chief of Staff at the American embassy in Budapest when she met Stephen. He introduced her to the benefits of the healing waters at his family’s spa, and they were inspired by the improvement they noticed in their skin.
They went to an Hungarian laboratory – the same lab that received the Nobel prize for discovering Vitamin C – and developed a way to transfer the beneficial minerals from the thermal waters and other nutrients past the skin cell barrier directly into the cell, rather than sitting on the skin surface where they can do little good.
The “Hydro Mineral Transference”(TM) process they developed enables minerals from the healing waters of Budapest to be absorbed by the skin for firmer, suppler and younger-looking skin.
I’ve been a website business consultant since 2003, and I have almost never heard of someone taking an opportunity like this and leveraging it to such an extent. In my experience this is incredibly rare – most people walk right past the opportunities lying in their path because it’s just too much trouble to bend over to pick them up.
The Omorovicza products are absolutely fabulous and I have huge respect for the owners and their team for their business achievement. As a website developer and SEO marketing specialist, I also appreciate the beauty of their website. In my opinion it’s an almost perfect example of a successful commercial website, combining beautiful clean design with effective layout for marketing and sales. I’m completely impressed, and I’ve started showing the site to my own clients as an example of how to use beautiful, spare design to achieve sales goals.
Their product offering, marketing, and pricing strategies are simply brilliant. I love seeing people being smart about their business!
Several weeks after I discovered Omorovicza, I was out running some errands and I stopped at the Pittsburgh Sephora store in Shadyside. After reading all the positive reviews on the Omorovicza website, I thought it might be worth it to give the luxury skincare line a try. I knew Sephora carried it online, and on the off-chance that I might get lucky, I asked if they had any Omorovicza products in stock at the store. Alas they said no, it’s only available online.
On my way out, another lady, a mature woman with fantastic skin asked if she could help me. I said “Thanks, but I was looking for an Hungarian skincare line and you only sell it online.” She said, “I’m Hungarian. What are you looking for?”
“Oh, lovely! My husband is Hungarian. I’m looking for Omorovicza”, I said.
Her face lit up. "Oh! That’s a *wonderful* product! Fantastic product!!! How did you find out about it – were you in Budapest?" I said I’d found it online. She said: "None of this stuff can hold a candle to Omorovicza." She gave a disdainful wave around the store. "This is all full of chemicals and poison. Buy Omorovicza online, from their website so you get their discounts. I promise you won’t regret it; it’s worth every penny." I asked her if she uses it, and she said she can’t buy it from Sephora because she’s the Dior sales rep! (LOL) She said she buys directly from the Omorovicza spa whenever she goes to Budapest. She said she always stops in for a facial and I should try it when I go to Hungary.
Still, I hesitated. By now I was convinced, but we were paying off an IRS bill and that took priority for a while.
In December I went back to St. Louis for a visit with family, and took this snapshot of myself while hiking on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. Granted, I was looking right into the late-afternoon sun, but I felt sad when I saw this photo, and resigned myself to looking older than I felt.
When I got back to my parent’s house, one of my nephews – aged 7 – laughed and said, “Aunt Mary looks older than Nana!” (“Nana” is my mother.) That was definitely one of life’s priceless moments…
Before
By February, my cheeks were covered in red, dry patches, and I was battling a couple of small breakouts of rosacea. I’d finally had enough. I decided to try Omorovicza.
The company is very smart with their pricing. True, their products are not cheap. However, they also provide 3 pricing tiers: baseline, Gold Collection, and their Blue Diamond Collection. It’s possible to pick up a complete set of skincare essentials within the baseline level, and then explore the more expensive collections for true luxury.
They also feature all kinds of special offers, contests, free giveaways, etc. on their website and social media accounts. There is usually some kind of special offer about every 3-4 weeks.
They offer free samples with every order.
The Introductory Kit was out-of-stock, so I ordered the Travel Kit, and selected the Thermal Cleansing Balm, Cleansing Foam, and the Instant Plumping Mask. For my 3 free sample sachets I chose the Gold Flash Firming Serum, the Rejuvenating Night Cream, and the sunscreen.
My order arrived quickly, but the Cleansing Foam was missing!
The packaging was beautiful. The Thermal Cleansing Balm and the other products all felt and smelled lovely, and I felt like a princess using them. Every day I looked forward to the pleasant ritual of washing my face before bedtime. It was very satisfying, and I was thrilled with the results.
The results were immediate.
After
The dots of rosacea I’d been fighting for weeks were almost all gone the following morning, after just one use. So were the flaky patches of chapped, dry, red skin on my cheeks. Don noticed the difference in my complexion within 2 days. The fine lines smoothed out. My frown lines were less noticeable. Everything began clearing up. If I had a breakout, it healed in a fraction of the time it usually took.
And the company was great about the Cleansing Foam – I received a full-size tube the following day with a note apologizing for running out of the travel size. Omorovicza is a real class act.
My first full-size purchase was the giant jar of Thermal Cleansing Balm after the travel size ran out. (The Travel size of the Thermal Cleansing Balm lasted about a week.) This is a magical substance that resembles black oily mud when putting it on, which rinses off completely clean, leaving the complexion moisturized and calmed. This is one of the first products in the Omorovicza line, and is made from the mud at the bottom of Lake Hevitz in Hungary.
Over the next few months I gradually began to acquire an array of Omorovicza products, many of which I set aside for our next desert vacation, which we were planning for July 2016.
In April, Don had a hard time with itchy skin that no topical lotion or ointment or medicine would stop. Based on customer reviews by people with the same problem, I bought him the Omorovicza Firming Body Oil and Body Cream, and his skin itchiness cleared up within a few days and has not come back. He loves the products and the way they smell.
We’re both really sensitive to product perfumes. (We know something about this subject because we did an SEO consulting project for a commercial scent manufacturer in Pittsburgh several years ago.) All of the Omorovicza products have very pleasant, very subtle scents. Nothing is too sweetly floral or overtly “feminine”.
Everything I tried smelled so nice that I decided to trust them and buy the perfume, Bagatelle de Gabrielle, and I love it! Don loves it. I get compliments on it all the time. It’s a very light, “clean” scent, which I find subtle and sophisticated.
The word "serum" has always had a negative connotation for me because of its association with blood, but I trusted Omorovicza and I read the ingredients lists on their serums, and there is nothing scary or concerning about any of these products.
So I’m completely hooked, and Don is really pleased with his products as well.
Thanks to Omorovicza, this year – finally! – my skin stayed hydrated during our 2-week camping and hiking vacation in Arches National Park in mid-July.
I had no breakouts during the entire road trip. My skin recovered from the chlorine in motel pool water without any trouble. The sunscreen was absolutely perfect! It was out of stock for a long time, but we were able to get it before the trip. The scent is divine, and more importantly, it went on smoothly and did not sting or burn our eyes when we were hiking. As you can see, the Arches National Park backcountry is an incredibly rugged environment. We hike freestyle through it, picking our way across the bare sandstone or using the washes, in order to avoid harming the delicate surface ecosystem. I took these shots during a rest break in the shade of a little juniper tree. It was about 4:00pm and the heat of the day: 110f+. The humidity was in the single digits.
Omorovicza Product Shoot in Arches National Park
On our last evening in camp, I took my stash of products up onto the rocks behind our campsite, and took some pictures in the saturated light of sunset. I’ve done a lot of product shoots for online stores, but the 60 foot drop-off right behind me, working in the blinding light and still-intense heat, made this one particularly fun.
Sometimes the effort pays off.
It’s now mid-October. Seriously, I’m an extremely jaded consumer, but I can’t recommend this brand highly enough! My skin looks and feels fantastic. I know I’ll never look 20 again, but I know I look better than I did last year, and I know I look as good as I can, and that’s worth a lot. I still have a little trouble with breakouts, but not every day as I did for years, and the scarring is gradually becoming less noticeable.
I’ll never buy skincare products from another brand as long as Omorovicza stays in business. The lady at Sephora promised me I’d love it, and she was right!
Experiment: Once I got over the euphoria of finding something that actually worked, I began to use the products more carefully, one at a time, and then in combinations, to see which ones had achieved which improvements. This also helped to stretch them out so they lasted longer.
Free Samples: The samples are a wonderful way of trying something new before buying it. I’ve found that the eye cream and the serum samples in particular last a long time – typically a week or more. Now I collect samples of products I use the most for backup when I run out, and for travel. I also keep an emergency set in my purse, which includes sunscreen, complexion corrector, and BB cream.
Make a Purchase Plan: After playing around with the initial Travel Set and free samples, I came up with a purchase plan, starting with acquiring a set of the basics: cleanser, moisturizer, exfoliant, mask, lip balm, sunscreen. (The sunscreen was out of stock but I put a notification request on it, and bought some as soon as it was available.)
Once I acquired the essentials and learned how to use them for best results, I began adding to my collection. Some things had an immediate, obvious effect, such as the Thermal Cleansing Balm, and others were more subtle and took more time as they work with the skin cells as they rejuvenate. I gradually acquired several products, such as the Firming Body Oil and Gold Sugar Scrub, for the specific challenges posed by camping and hiking in the desert in July at an altitude of 5,000 feet.
Keep a Record: I created an Excel spreadsheet to track my purchases, including how much the product cost, how long it lasted, and a field with notes about its use and effectiveness.
Some is Better than None: Sometimes when you run out of something by Omorovicza, you just have to suck it up and wait until payday to order more. Sometimes their products go out of stock; they were out of sunscreen for months. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself with less Omorovicza on hand than you would like, then use whatever you do have as the base layer against your skin. (Save free samples for backup!) When I was unable to get the sunscreen and had no choice but to keep using Banana Boat, at least it went on top of a layer of Omorovicza serum or moisturizer. I noticed that it did not sting or irritate my skin as much as it normally would.
Expense is relative. Omorovicza isn't cheap, but it was more expensive to throw away all the Clinique crap I bought last summer because it wrecked my skin.
One of the benefits of the cost for me is that it basically forces me to be more disciplined about my skincare regimen: the products feel and smell wonderful, and using them is a real pleasure. Even after all this time I still look forward to washing my face twice a day, with more complex routines on the weekends. Here are reviews of some of the products I use regularly:
There was no way to sample the perfume before purchasing, but I was so impressed with the elegance and restraint of the other product scents that I decided to try Bagatelle de Gabrielle. According to Omorovicza, this perfume is a “fragile balance between Orange Flower and Tonka bean. Freesia and lavender notes contrast with the feminine sensuality of tuberose.” I don’t know very much about perfume so I’ll take their word for it. What I do know is that I love this perfume so much I’ve hardly worn anything else since I first put it on. As I said, I’m extremely sensitive to scent, and there is nothing unpleasant about this one. Not even a hint of a headache. Don loves it. It has a very clean, light smell, without being too astringent or “soap-like”.
Usage Rate: 1/2 bottle in 6 months
I use this as a daytime moisturizer. This was one of the products that really had a dramatic effect on my skin: the number and frequency of breakouts on the side of my nose dropped significantly as soon as I began using the Balancing Moisturizer.
First I wash my face in the morning with Cleansing Foam. While my face is still slightly damp I apply a couple of drops of the Gold Flash Firming Serum, and then I put the moisturizer on top of that. Sunscreen goes over all.
Usage Rate: 2/3 of a bottle in 5 months
I think that by applying the moisturizer over the Gold Flash Firming Serum, it spreads more easily and I use less as a result. An almond-size amount is plenty for face and neck.
In general I’ve avoided trying the Blue Diamond products because I’m afraid I’ll really want them, and they are the most expensive set in the Omorovicza product line. However, I have tried several samples of this eye cream, and it’s truly lovely. I did not notice a dramatic difference, but like many other Omorovicza products, consistent use over time would probably make the price completely worth it.
Usage Rate: One free sample is enough to last more than a week. All you need are a couple of drops
I generally apply eye creams at night, after washing and moisturizing.
My husband loves this! He was having a terrible time with dry itchy skin on his back last spring, and this cream, along with the Body Firming Oil, completely cleared it up. The texture is very nice, and the scent is very light – there is a very faint hint of something that reminds me of fresh lumber, or sawdust, which is actually quite pleasant.
Usage Rate: This is a big jar, and Don uses it for spot-treatment; the first jar lasted about 7 months
Love. My skin loves this cleanser. It’s a beautiful pastel blue from the copper content. The smell is light and clean, and using it is a pure pleasure. I use this for my morning cleanser. It’s incredibly gentle and silky-feeling, but also strong enough to remove makeup without being harsh. A pea-size amount is plenty – just add a few drops of water to work it into a fine lather. I rinse off using a washcloth, and it leaves my skin with a very nice “matte” feeling; clean but not harshly stripped. I usually follow with a small application of the Refining Face Polisher on the left side of my nose, which I’ve discovered helps to keep the whiteheads from forming.
Interestingly, this was the only Omorovicza product that succumbed to the heat when we were camping in Arches in July. We kept our Omorovicza stash in an insulated, soft-sided lunchbox, buried under pillows under a cot in our tent. Everything else was fine, but the Cleansing Foam liquefied in the extreme heat. We put it on ice in the cooler and it turned back into a paste and was fine.
Usage Rate: I’m still working my way through the first tube – the original replacement for the out-of-stock travel size from my very first order back in early February. It’s been about 9 months, and I estimate I have enough left for another month or two.
This was another product that made a dramatic difference. It’s a mild facial peel, and because it goes on in two steps – a paste and an activator – using it is always a bit of a scientific production and highly entertaining. My complexion afterwards is bright and clear.
Even after watching the product page video on the Omorovicza website, and after reading the step-by-step instructions printed inside the box, this product still had a bit of a learning curve for me. I discovered that you really have to slather on the activator in order to generate the mousse texture the way Margaret does on the back of her hand in the video.
The blue copper paste is very thick, and it has a pleasant smell that reminds of something I haven’t been able to remember yet. The lactic acid activator is a rather thin, clear liquid, and it took me awhile to learn how to handle it. Of all the Omorovicza products I’ve tried, this is the only one with a scent I don’t care for. But it’s not terribly strong and it doesn’t last long, and the product works so beautifully that I don’t mind it.
Usage Rate: I use this product once a week, generally for some extra pampering time over the weekend. One pair of copper paste and activator tubes contains enough product for 3 applications.
This stuff is great! It contains fine, light grey Hungarian mud from Lake Heviz, the second largest thermal lake in the world. It is very rich in minerals, and unlike other mud masks I’ve tried, this one does not make me feel like a mummy as it dries. You do need to apply moisturizer afterwards, but it does not leave my skin feeling like parchment. Instead it just feels incredibly clean, but soft and flexible at the same time.
The product has a wonderful, earthy-spicy smell! Very organic. A couple of minutes after applying it in a thin layer all over my face and neck, I experience a definite sensation of warmth with some tingling. This is completely normal, and passes after a couple of minutes. I leave it on until it’s completely dry – about 20 minutes – then rinse off with luke-warm water using a washcloth. I often follow with a Biore nose strip, and when that’s done, I finish with an extra amount of Gold Night Drops, and then Rejuvenating Night Cream and/or Miracle Facial Oil.
Some of the other product reviewers mention using this as a spot treatment for blemishes, by applying a small amount and leaving it on overnight. I often do this also when I can tell that the left side of my nose is going to break out. It’s often enough to stop the problem, or at least reduce it significantly.
Usage Rate: My first 1.7 oz bottle lasted about 6 months
I originally bought this oil for my husband, who was having a terrible time with itchy skin on his back and neck, based on comments by another reviewer who bought it for her husband for the same reason. It brought immediate relief, and the problem was completely cleared up within a few days. We’ve both been using it for dry skin ever since. This is also fantastic as a massage oil.
Usage Rate: Don is still going through the first bottle from April, and it appears that he still has about a month’s-worth left. So about 8 months.
This is the first serum I’ve ever tried, and one of my favorite Omorovicza products. I use this in the daytime, applying a couple of drops to my face and neck while my skin is still damp after washing, then putting on moisturizer. The texture is very fine, with a slight shimmer from the colloidal gold, and a very nice, light scent.
This serum is fantastic! It is very effective as an anti-inflammatory, and I also use it as a spot treatment on blemishes or other problem areas. This product is one of my heroes.
Usage Rate: A 1.02 oz bottle is enough to last for about 3-1/2 to 4 months.
I’ve only had the chance to use the Gold Hydralifting Mask a couple of times via free samples. This is a lovely product that does exactly what it says it does – it tightens up my skin and removes the appearance of fine lines and imperfections. I like to use this before going out for a special evening for an extra boost of beauty confidence. At some point I’d like to buy a full-size jar – this is not a daily use product, and I’m sure it would last a long time.
Usage Rate: A free sample contains enough product for a couple of applications.
I like this night serum, which I apply after rinsing off the Thermal Cleansing Balm at night. It has a beautiful and refreshing smell. It is a thinner liquid than the Gold Flash Firming Serum, and I find that it goes on more smoothly and evenly if my skin is slightly damp.
Usage Rate: I don't use this every night, and a bottle lasts for several months.
This was the first Omorovicza product I ever tried, and it's still one of my favorites. It is rich in Hungarian moor mud, with an almost oily texture that seemed a little odd at first. However, it feels very soothing as I apply it to my skin and massage it in. I enjoy the scent, and it leaves my skin feeling clean and hydrated.
I use this cleanser at night because I like the way it removes sunscreen and makeup. This product helped to soothe my skin after just one application, in the dead of winter. The patches of dry, flaky skin and redness disappeared and never came back no matter how much I was exposed to cold, icy winds and snowy weather. When I came down with a cold, I discovered that using the Thermal Cleansing Balm made me feel better instantly, I assume from high mineral content (perhaps some zinc?), which was a very effective therapy for the physical aches and pains and general misery of feeling sick.
On hot, humid summer nights, I don’t have to follow with additional moisturizer – the weird and wonderful Thermal Cleansing Balm black mud is enough.
Usage Rate: One of the large containers lasts me for several months, especially if I don't use it every night.
Other favorite products include the Miracle Facial Oil, Perfecting Lip Balm, Refining Facial Polisher, and the Blue Diamond Concentrate and Supercream (the only products that can keep my skin moisturized in the desert).
If you’re having a difficult time with your skin, I strongly suggest you go to the Omorovicza.com website or find their products at a high-end department store, and see for yourself. As the lady at Sephora told me: "I promise you won’t regret it; it’s worth every penny."
